How Does Drive Offsets Affect Ripping

If you are an experienced CD ripper, you may notice a thing called "offset". So how does it affect our ripping? I will reveal that to you.

Beginning

The research came from this album: Girls' Generation (소녀시대) - Genie (소원을 말해봐).

My friend A ripped a release whose cat. # is SMCD-186. And another friend B’s ripping can be downloaded from here (extraction code: d09f). Check two logs, we can find their ToCs, peak levels, track CRCs are the same on 1~5 tracks, but on track 6, their CRCs are different.

Different CRC means different audio data. So I asked A to give me track 6 and threw it into fb2k to see its MD5, they are different, indeed. So the difference comes from where? I transcoded them to WAV and use the EAC WAV comparison tool to test, then got this result:

Not the same. Let’s see what did ARDB and CTDB say. Threw the whole album files into CUETools and tested, here are the results:

Why

It’s worth thinking about this. Why they can own the same ARDB and CTDB ID with different audio data, which means in the database’s eyes, they are the same and considered as Accurately ripped. I’m gonna figure this out, So I see:

The checksum algorithm ignores the first 2939 samples (just under 5 frames, a little over 0.013s of audio) at the beginning of the first track, and ignores 2940 samples (exactly 5 frames) at the end of the last track. The largest drive offset in the database, as of late 2011, is only 1776 samples, so when an offset-corrected drive “overreads” beyond the boundaries of the audio data, it normally won’t affect the checksum. If the overread were to exceed 2940 samples, though, the algorithm assumes the data is padded with digital silence (nothing but zeroes). If your drive isn’t capable of overreading and your DAE software doesn’t zero-pad the rip to simulate an overread, then it’s unlikely the checksums of your rips will be submitted to or compared against those in the AccurateRip database.

Understand. The reason why they can share the same database ID is databases ignored a part of samples that covered different samples. And samples that remained are the same.

Research

But I want to know the detail about their differences. The divergences are focused on the last 0.015 seconds. Let’s have a look first. Adobe Audition, GO!

I zoomed in to observe the last 0.186 seconds of both track 6s, here is the result:

They are different. What about the wave? (Please notice that I zoomed up the scale on the right. If I didn’t do so, you can’t find any difference, because the sound is too weak)

You can see B’s tail lack some content obviously, how long it is? As we mentioned above, the length of difference is 0.015 seconds, and there are 44100 samples per second. So 0.015 seconds equals around 661 samples. Read the logs again:

B’s offset is 667, and A’s offset is 6, 661 = 667 - 6. Of course, the difference has a relationship with the offset of drives. Consider both rippings didn’t open “Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out” function, which means when a drive can not read anything when it runs into Lead-Out area, and thus can only add empty samples. They have 661 samples difference, which means the drive with 667 offset added 667 empty samples and the other one added 6.

Here we can tell, the saying “Different drives can rip the same data from the same CD if configured correctly” should have a limitation, which is “Within the error range”. If we require “Bit-accuracy”, they are not eligible. But this tiny little difference can not be aware by a human. Besides, we can get the conclusion that, if the drive doesn’t have overread ability or is closed in EAC settings, then with the higher positive offset value, we are at risk of losing more samples on the tail.

Experiment

The conclusion above is my reasonable prediction, then we need to do a controlled variable experiment to verify it. Here are the materials:

  • Drive: BENQ CDRW 52X32 (support overread with 738 offset value);
  • CD: doriko - 花束 ~the best of doriko feat. 初音ミク~;
  • Setting: only “Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out” was turned on or off, everything else is the same.

When we opened overread, the CRC of the last track is A701DB3C; but if we closed overread, the CRC is 40696FCD. So the media data is different indeed, and their MD5 are B60D05BFA5474685DA7E491C67AF9BAC and 28DC4021FC14D5A274FB44E956B3F62A, but share the same AR CRC, which is A5B4B8A1. Look at the ordinate, it was enlarged a lot by me. The number on top and bottom used to be 0 (represent loudest), but they are only -72 now. That means the sound is too quiet that can’t be heard by a human. We may consider it as silence.

The results verified my hypothesis: if the drive doesn’t have overread ability or closed in EAC settings, then with the higher positive offset value, we are at risk of losing more samples on the tail. Unless the last part of the last track is pure silence. If it is, then turning overread on or off will make no difference:

Conclusion

So, is overread ability or turning it on important? The answer is no, here are the reasons:

  • ARDB and CTDB can avoid this problem at first;
  • Some CDs own pure silence in this area, so turning on and off are the same;
  • Even there does exist data difference, considering its loudness and duration, we humans can not feel it.
