Two CDs from the Same Album
There are two possible situations. The CDs may belong to the same edition or not. But the term “edition” does not mean release here, it means, two CDs from the same album with substantive different data belonging to different editions. For example, Your Name. OST has Japanese and Chinese releases, their area and appearance are not the same, but their audio data doesn’t have substantive differences. So they belong to the same edition.
Two CDs Belong to Different Editions
That means, the data stored in these two CDs have substantive differences, which can be big or small, here are some examples.
A. Deluxe Edition
Deluxe editions may only add some tracks to the original editions. Though we consider a deluxe edition as a different edition, ignore the extra tracks, the common tracks may be the same. Such as Taylor Swift - Lover

If you observe the CRCs of tracks in both CDs, you can see through the track number is different, but the audio data of track 1~17 is the same, the difference of track 18 is because of “overread”, we will talk about it later.
B. Remastered

In all situations, only this one may allow you to use different drives to rip bit-accurate tracks from different CDs. Some albums sell well and then make reissues, the audio data may not change, but the price would be much lower than the original edition. There is no difference between the two CDs. But why the CRC of the last tracks are not the same and are reported All tracks accurately ripped
? Here is the reason.
Principle
Offset
There are two online databases, which are CTDB (CUETools database) and ARDB (AccurateRip database). The former doesn’t care offset, so in situations D and E, they will have the same CTDB TOCID. So if you want to judge editions, you can see if the CDTB IDs are the same. If the answer is yes, then the two CDs are the same edition.
ARDB is different, it cares offset. That’s why ripping correctly needs a correct offset configuration. Buy configure the right offset number, you can make sure to rip the same part of the disc with different drivers, so it’s possible to compare the rips. So in situation D, the two ARDB IDs are not the same. But in E, they will be the same.
The description above may be abstract. Let’s see a simplified example. Now we have 10 cubes on the ground and they are marked:
4~7 are what we need. So we find a gripper that can catch 6 cubes at one time. But the gripper has something wrong, which deviates 1 cube. That means, it will catch 4~9 rather than 3~8:
Though the cubes we need are in it, but not on the center. If there is another person whose gripper deviates in the opposite direction, it will catch 2~7:
We compared together and find that we all have effective content, but have 2 cubes offset. If we take 4 cubes in the center, I will lose No. 4 cube:
And that guy will lose No. 7:
This is the problem if we didn’t set offset. Once we did, our grippers can adjust themselves and catch correct cubes like “④ ⑤ ⑥ ⑦”. Different grippers can catch the same cubes.
1 is a small offset number. What if the offset is 2?
So we lose No. 7 at the beginning! If we still want to compare with others, we have to add an extra cube. So we need to add an empty cube in it, like:
So, except No. 7, other cubes can be compared. This is how ARDB compares rips. ARDB knows the offsets are various, so it can ignore a part of samples (on head and tail) when comparing. That’s why we see the situation E, though there is little difference on the last track, still be considered a match by ARDB.
Overread
If my gripper’s offset is big, can I let it catch more cubes at once? Then I can get cubes that would have been thrown. For example, catch 7 cubes at once:
Nice, 4~7 are included. This ability is called “Overread”.
Please notice that some drives support overread but others do not. This function is not very important because it doesn’t affect database matching or listening. Please read How Does Drive Offsets Affect Ripping for more information.
Conclusion
If we only consider audio data, then in situations D, E, use any qualified drive, by setting correctly, you may rip consistent results within the error range with different drives.
But, if you want to rip bit-accurate data, then you have to use CDs mentioned in situation E, and use drives that support overread. Then open this function in your DAE software (in EAC, it calls Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out
). Then you can rip audio that exactly the same.
